Vacationing Here Archives
I tried to post this message on Tripadvisor, but as I expected they rejected it. Since this board gets so much traffic also, thought I'd post the information and pictures here:
Not sure if this information and pictures will get posted on the Trip Advisor board, but will try! We love the Palace Resorts & have never stayed at Xpu Ha but visited there many times. We recently returned from the Barcelo Colonial January 20th 2006 and this property is next door to the Xpu Palace. I seem to be reading a lot of conflicting information about this resort and an opening date. I feel SO SORRY for people booked here & thought you should see the REAL condition of the resort from the beach/ocean side. We walked down the beach from the Barcelo and took these pictures on 1/17/06. I cannot imagine that they will reopen anytime soon. All rooms visible seemed to be stripped and we saw no repair work being done. We did see a couple or workers, but they seemed to be maybe removing materials?? Not to add to any misinformation, but we were also told by a worker at the Colonial that the Barcelo company had purchased the Xpu Ha property and would be expanding their resort to this area. Not sure about the truth of that info though. Please

Now why in the world would Trip Advisor remove that post? Your pictures are amazing to see.
They review all submissions prior to posting & this was the message they sent me:
Thank you for taking the time to write to TripAdvisor. Unfortunately, a review without a substantive first-hand account of your experience is not very helpful to other travelers. You are welcome to re-submit an account of a first-hand travel experience through the user review form on our site.

They won't accept first-hand input complete with pictures, but will accept all the bogus so-called reviews that any nutcase out there will submit. A large number of their reviews are posted by people from competing resorts and just general detractors, from what I've heard. Too bad, because it's a good idea.

That's why we come here!
Real reviews from real people.
Thanks for posting those pics, Tracey.
Correct me if I'm mistaken, but didn't that point used to be heavily wooded? If so, did you get the impression that recent hurricanes or demolition were to blame for the lack of trees?
It will be interesting to see what happens to that sought after piece of land.
Dave
First thanks for the pics of Xpu-Ha, it doesn't look like much is happening there from these pics.
I'll bet if you take this part (below) out, tripadvisor will post your pics

would be better Monitors than what they have. the concept they have is good, but they made a big mistake not to have monitors from the beginning. tim
I'm not sure about the trees. This was an area of the property that I can't really remember. We frequented the lagoon area which was more to the South of this point (and around the corner). I want to say that when we looked North from the pier area around the lagoon the area was fairly clear of vegetation--but I really can't remember.
