MARK AND DANETTE’S CANCUN – MOON PALACE TRIP REPORT (SUMMER 1998)

1ST INSTALLMENT (1 of 6)

7/26 – Woke up at 4:30am for our 9:30 flight out of S.A. – couldn’t sleep and needed a little ‘encouragement’ to get on the plane (2 bottles of champagne and orange juice). We went through Funjet – so we were suppose to meet the guy at the airport at 7:00am. The Funjet guy wasn’t there yet (we were the first ones there, obviously we had CAS) – but the people with MLT were there and were more than happy to help us. They even arranged for us to have, what they called, the best seats on the plane. After much waiting at the airport, we finally boarded the plane and headed for Cancun. Arrived in Cancun 10min. early. No red lights – found Lomas Travel and were escorted to our van headed to the Moon Palace. The driver wanted the two of us to sit up front with him. He made some joke about Chicken Pizza (Chiten-Itza), gave us some beers and listened as Mark and I talked endlessly about not believing we had actually made it here! As we approached the hotel – the sight was AWESOME!!! Our bags were taken from the van and placed in a row outside the lobby. We went to check-in and received our wrist bands. There were frozen Margaritas, Pina-Coladas and champagne waiting at the check-in/registration room. Needless to say – we both indulged in more than our fair share. We were told to come back at 3:00pm (check in time) to receive our room number. It was about 1:00 by this time. We went to the pool area – at this point we were in total shock. Not only had I never seen a pool that large before – I had never seen the Caribbean with all it’s many colors. I’m sure that everyone there knew that we had just arrived and had never seen a sight so beautiful. Took several pictures – had more drinks and made it back to check-in by 3:00. The line was long and so I made Mark stand in line and I found a seat at one of the tables and helped myself to yet more frozen beverages. As we waited, we et a couple who were booked at the Sun Palace but were upgraded to the Moon Palace and offered a free week’s stay at the Sun Palace, because they were over-booked. They were quite happy with the trade. Mark finally made it to the front of the line and was told to come back at 3:45. So he sat with me at the table and we had more frozen delights. Mark got back in line at 3:45 and was told 20 more minutes. No problem – give me more pina-coladas. About 5 after 4:00 – we got our room number and made our way to the room!!!!

A couple of things here:

We knew that check-in was at 3:00pm and we knew our arrival time. We planned on a wait. Since you can eat and drink once you get your wrist bands – you should go for it. We went to the pool – had some drinks, took some pictures and explored the lobby area – which is beautiful (but after seeing the FACB – well that’s another story). We also checked on our luggage a few times – just to make sure that it was still there – any fears went unfounded.
Also, we knew that most people on the board agreed that buildings #7 and #15 were the best. We did E-mail the Moon Palace before our trip to request rooms in one of these buildings, however they responded that since we booked with Funjet – they could not help us. We would have to go through Funjet. We decided to take our chances and make the best of what we may get.

POSITIVE ATTITUDE – you definitely need one. We met a few people who felt “put-out” for having to wait. Since we prepared – Thanks to this board and all the helpful people here – we made the best of it!

We ended up with room 3905. We found our luggage and headed for the room. The bell-boys and staff are VERY courteous and most helpful. Once in the room, after the initial oohs and aahs, we changed and headed to the pool where we stayed until dusk. We were asked to leave the pool area because a storm had blown in – we thought came out of nowhere. But you can imagine how drunk (that is the only way to describe it) we were. Back to the room. A note about the room: We had the last room next to construction of new rooms being added to our building. We could’ve asked to move, but it really didn’t bother us much and we planned to be out most of the time (another story). We did end up with the King size bed that we wanted. We had a nice view of the ocean. The Jacuzzi – (that’s part of the other story – will get to that) was umm… very nice.
More to come – including the saga of the Jacuzzi….
