OUR AKUMAL ADVENTURE, PART 1a

I have always been told to begin a story at the beginning, but what is the beginning? Is it the fascination I felt for Club Oasis Akumal when I first saw its photo in a brochure? Is it when we found out that a return trip to Aruba this year was $1,000 more for the same package as last year? Was it during the frantic calls and e-mail exchanges with our travel agent in Dallas, to get a trip arranged for the time my husband, Steve, had vacation? Or perhaps it was just with the rain…

Saturday, 6/17/00, Day “0”

We live in eastern Oklahoma and fly out of Dallas. At 4 a.m. this morning, a hard rain with thunder and lightning came up and continued. We got up, loaded the SUV with our luggage, and backed out of the driveway at 8:55 a.m. We topped off the gas tank and got onto I40 to I69 heading south. It was raining.

We stopped for lunch at Bledsoe’s Diner in Atoka ($4.95 all you can eat buffet) and ate as the sun came out. The minute we got back into the SUV and started off, the rains came again.

I69 feeds into I75 in Texas. We take Texas SH121 to get to DFW. The rain became a real toad-strangler on 121. We hoped that the guy in front of us, whose taillights we were following, was still on the road. Then the stoplight was out at 121 and the North Dallas Tollway, took about 10 minutes to get through.

We finally reached the DFW Hyatt Regency about 3 p.m., a 6-hour trip in what usually takes 4-1/2 hours. We checked in at the East Tower, but were put in the West Tower because they were turning off the electricity in the East Tower for maintenance at midnight. A comment here: The DFW Hyatt is beginning to show its age. We overheard on our return that the East Tower will soon be torn down and a new hotel built. I don’t know if it will still be a Hyatt, but the employees are worried.

The bellman drove us over to the West Tower and got us and our stuff in the elevator. We tipped him a couple of bucks and proceeded to our room. We started some rearrangement and removal of things from the carry-on and suitcases to be left in the SUV. We did manage to eliminate a few things. (No, honey, I doubt you’ll need your long pants!) Definitely could have eliminated some more, but didn’t realize that at the time. Oh, well, we always overpack.

We then walked back over to the East Tower before 5 to meet our very good friend Bodil, who lives in Arlington, TX. She showed us some photos of her remodeled bathroom, we chatted for a while, then we walked back to the other tower for dinner at the S.O.S. Diner. Steve and I had superb prime rib dinners, but Bo only had coffee because she had to go home and cook for her younger son John, who was in for the weekend. (Rats!) Bo loaned me Michael Coe’s new book, Breaking the Maya Code, to take with me.

After dinner, which was accompanied by a couple of Heineken Darks, we went to the room and watched a movie. This turned out to be On Hostile Ground, one of the few disaster films I had not seen, about sinkholes in New Orleans during Mardi Gras. (Hmmm, sinkholes, cenotes…) After that, Steve still had a little hungry pocket to fill, so we came back down in search of a snack. Popcorn at the S.O.S. Bar, perfect! We sat and had some beer, ate popcorn, and people watched.

We walked back to the other side (anybody notice yet that there’s a lot of walking involved here?) and went to our room, watched a little more TV, and Steve got in bed. I had another drink (we carried the necessities with us), stood on the balcony to watch the planes, and chatted with the lady on the next balcony (I’ll strike up a conversation with anyone!). Then bed. Steve was still awake and…well, suffice it to say we didn’t go to sleep right away.

Tomorrow, sometime, Cancun. I think I dreamed of the ocean…
