OUR AKUMAL ADVENTURE, PART 7

Sunday, 6/25/00, Day “8”

Okay, I had an awful night waking up every hour to blow my nose. I’m starting to get whiny. It’s not permitted to be sick in paradise, is it?

We get up at 6:20 and go through the usual balcony routine. When we get to breakfast, we find the wait staff not quite as efficient as usual, probably because it’s Sunday and a couple less people are working. We ate lightly and were on the beach by 8:30.

Steve and I were talking yesterday afternoon about one of the bartenders, Marcelino. He reminded me a bit of a Weeper Capuchin monkey, with thin lips and sloe eyes. His eyes were often half-closed, and he often appeared to be in a kind of waking dream. He’s a nice little fellow, but sometimes we sense that he is a bit confused about the world. Here we are, people from over the horizon—what must our world be like? We decided, rich or poor, the problems are the same—how do I put food on the table, how do I treat my friends and family, how do I interact with strangers? I don’t know if the people here ask themselves, “Why am I here?” We, at least, have the luxury of contemplating that question. On the other hand, maybe they just accept existence as a given and get on with their lives...

We saw a sea eagle today, really cool.

This afternoon, we were at the Crab Bar, since the water got pretty rough. Fernando was bartending. John was there, saw Fernando using a bar cloth, and asked if he could have one. Sure. Can we have one, too? No problem. Aha! Washcloth issue resolved for the rest of our stay!

Also, when they cleaned the room this afternoon (late, as usual), they had not left any new soap. I asked at the desk for some, in my best Spanish, of course. The next time we were in the room, there were two new soap bars.

We had arranged to have dinner at the Galera. We each had a nice mixed salad. I had the tortilla soup and Steve had the mushroom soup, both excellent. For our entree, we had chosen the T-bones. Well, unfortunately, they were thin, overcooked, and somewhat tough (I do them much better). Our waiter was Rafael, who did a very, very nice presentation of the bananas flambé. He explained to me what all they used for the sauce and showed me how to spiral cut the orange peel for the presentation. While the steaks were not great, the dinner was a very pleasant interlude away from the buffet.

After dinner, we once again patronized the Akumal Bar to await “casino night.” Steve headed off to bed early, hoping to whip the remains of his cold. I, on the other hand, love gambling, even if it’s for “fun” money. Well, I sat at a blackjack table with Joél (one of the “animation team”) dealing. At the same table were a couple of teenagers from North Carolina. Suddenly, I had a mission. No one, including Joél, knew how the game worked! I had a great time teaching them all.

At the same table, a gentleman from Mérida was sitting, with his two sons. These people were a very nice family with whom I often spoke during their stay. I was chatting with them and Joél in Spanish, when suddenly the father tells one of his kids, “Practice your English!” I thought that was so funny!

Anyway, we played for a while. I ended up with $50 (having started with $20), which I gave to the older boy from Mérida. After play ended, we had an “auction” for some prizes. There were the usual bottle of tequila, a keychain, and some other things. The young lad from Mérida had enough to get a couple of the items.

I got my usual beer to go, sat on our balcony, and got in bed about 11:30.

Tomorrow, we go to Akumal, and return with a surprise...
