OUR AKUMAL ADVENTURE, PART 9

Tuesday, 6/27/00, Day “10”

Woke up about 5:45 a.m. because I thought I heard thunder. Sure enough, big thunderhead making its way slowly onshore. Some really impressive lightning. (I love watching storms.) It moved south before it got to us, though.

I really, really wanted a fried egg this morning, but the cook wasn’t doing so well and ended up breaking the yolk. Oh, well, I’ve done that a time or two and I didn’t starve.

We went back to the room, I washed out handkerchiefs, and we prepared for the beach, hitting our palapa about 8:30. I might note that since we had found those lounge cushions, we had been bringing them up to the room each evening. Sure made sitting a lot easier...

Bob asked us if we would change out their towels for them, which we did.

As we sat on the beach, Steve went over and had a long animated discussion with Jorge. I also went and talked with Jorge. Next week is his birthday—he will be 27. I wished him feliz cumpleaños. His dog is 3 years old this month (and she’s such a sweetie). Jorge and I talked about “fish we have seen and loved.” He’s seen a couple of whale sharks, eagle rays, and all kinds of neat stuff. I told him about my encounters with jellyfish and barracudas. By the way, there were a couple of barracudas that hung about the beach, for some reason usually under the boat to the right. All the other fish hung out under another boat!

I snorkeled out to Fish Group C. As I approached, I saw a couple of French grunts “kissing.” When I looked this up, I found, according to the Peterson Field Guide to Atlantic Coast Fishes, “Some species (especially Bluestriped, White, and French grunts) pair in a peculiar kissing display, the reason for which is unknown.” So, I observed an odd behavior that no one apparently knows the reason for. Interesting...

While schooling with the gang, I saw a night sergeant, a species I had only previously seen one time, in Aruba.

As I sat on my lounge, Bob came by and said something to the effect that he would have lunch grilled at about 1. Okay, cool, I said, not thinking any more of it. Well, Steve and I went off to lunch, as did John and Sylvia. We had barely started when Gayle comes in and says, “Didn’t Bob invite you to lunch?” Uh, no, there wasn’t anything specific said.

Anyway, turned out Bob was cooking up all their food because they were leaving tomorrow and was supposed to ask us over, along with John and Sylvia and the “kids.” Well, what a fiesta we had! We kept making beer runs with a plastic pitcher (“Más cerveza para la fiesta, por favor!”). The dorado Bob cooked was excellent. Since we’d already eaten some, we didn’t eat a lot at the fiesta, but we chatted and ate and drank and had a lot of fun.

Bob gave Steve the scraps to feed the fish with. When Steve went to do that, the barracuda followed him around like a puppy!

After the party, we got ready for the evening. We ate only lightly, of course, but enjoyed the Mariachi band in Arrecifes again. It was “Latin Night” at the Akumal Bar, with the same dancers as before and quite good.

We retired for the night wondering what other adventures awaited us...

Wednesday, 6/28/00, Day “11”

Got up about 6:11 a.m. this morning. It is cloudy. Steve has arranged to go fishing again, with the guy I mentioned previously staying at Barcelo Maya. We had breakfast in Arrecifes this morning. They have opened it up for breakfast and dinner as well as lunch. We figure there must be more people coming in.

Steve left around 9 to go fishing with Jorge, Paul, and the guy from Barcelo Maya. It started raining a bit, and I headed up to the bar. I ended up having a delightful conversation with Andrea (the lady from Frankfurt) and Rosana, who was from Guatemala and spoke both English and German (she is a Spanish teacher). We stood there for quite some time, exchanging words in English, German, and Spanish. It was a lot of fun.

Eventually, Steve came back. He had caught another barracuda, slightly larger than the previous one. The other fellow was skunked. Another pic of the conquering hero.

Late in the afternoon, a big wind came up, driving us all from the beach. I believe I was the last one to leave, since I was performing my policing duties. The wind nearly blew me away with the cushion!

We didn’t bother with dinner, since neither of us was hungry, just sat at the Akumal Bar. We talked with Rosana and her husband Hector and their very pretty and charming daughter Daniella. Rosana said I didn’t have an accent in Spanish, which delighted me once again. We have really enjoyed meeting and talking with people from various countries here.

Gaby and Johnny were at their best with a big crowd. We had a nice conversation with them on their break. Once again, I was up and dancing with them. (I really would like to be assured I will never, ever meet the other guests again!) One couple got up and danced several times; they were very good, but their dancing career was short-lived. Two days later, she stepped on a sea urchin. How’s that for a good way to ruin a vacation?

Tomorrow, Tulum...
