OUR AKUMAL ADVENTURE, PART 11

Friday, 6/30/00, Day “13”

I kept hearing thunder throughout the night, and it rained, but it was clear this morning when I got up shortly after 6 a.m. Oh dear, our wonderful adventure is almost over. Last week seemed to go at a moderate pace, but this week has flown by. My notes are getting briefer and more compressed, just highlights of things. I also find myself repeating some things, just to make sure I’ve got them down, like all the birds and animals we saw.

Steve left with Jorge at 6:45. Jorge had mentioned to Steve that so often people make fishing appointments with him, only to show up late or not at all. He didn’t have that problem with Steve—when it’s time to fish, it’s time to fish!

I had some coffee and a bite to eat at Tucanes, then returned to the room. Although we had put our towels on the lounges of our palapa, I stayed upstairs. I had a dreadful coughing bout that made me sick to my stomach. Afterwards, I just felt like staying in the A/C and not doing anything. Eventually, I managed to clear my head up and get ready for the beach. I was just locking the balcony door when I saw Jorge and Steve coming back in. It was before 9, so they’d hardly been gone 2 hours (the fishing trips are usually 3 to 4 hours).

I quickly grabbed the stuff up and hurried down to the beach, taking the camera over to the boat. (Interestingly enough, it was Jorge who first noticed I was not under the palapa.) Well, out of the boat come two huge dorados, one about 20 pounds and the other 25+. Then Steve tells me he caught a 60- to 70-pound sailfish, which they released. Jorge commented it was the biggest sailfish he’d seen in a long time. The catch ended up amounting to four fish because when Jorge was getting ready to fillet the dorado, he found a tiny flying fish that had apparently jumped in the boat!

Jorge backed away when I was going to take the picture of Steve and his dorados, but I said, “No, no! You must be in it, too, amigo!” Jorge gave us each a bottle of XX and proceeded to fillet the fish. I wasn’t really ready for a beer yet, but, hey, it was a Dos Equis!

Jorge gave us a plastic bag with one-half of one fillet of the smaller fish. I took it up to Arrecifes and asked to speak to Ricardo, who I knew was working that morning. I stood waiting for a while, and then Noe appeared. I held up the bag and said, “Dinner.” “For me?” Noe jokingly asked. Well, we had a round of amusing banter, him teasing me all the while. He noted what time we wanted to eat—7:30—and I left the fish in his capable hands. Jorge gave the local barracuda the scraps, almost feeding it by hand.

We spent the rest of the day as usual, snorkeling, relaxing, having some drinks, and chatting with people. Many had heard about Steve’s great catch and congratulated him on it. We ate a couple of hot dogs and hamburgers at the Turtle Bar for lunch. While we were sitting there, Noe came by. He got to joking with us that when it was time to leave, I would stay with him and we would send Steve home alone. He is quite a character. I also overheard him talking to one of the German couples in German, so he is an accomplished and intelligent man as well.

After our lunch and socializing, we moved back to our palapa. Steve snorkeled for shells. I took a little dip and watched the ocean. We got ready for dinner relatively early and went to the Akumal Bar for a while. There tends to be a nice little breeze there, and we sure did enjoy drinking from real glasses. We both had a Bloody Mary, which was excellent. I carried one to Arrecifes for dinner.

Ricardo presented our dorado on a large platter of shredded lettuce. And I mean large! They had cooked it perfectly, with what seemed like lemon juice and garlic. We asked Ricardo to join us, but he properly declined as being on duty. Steve and I each ate some, then invited some of our German friends to share it with us. Then we ate some more. There were still two or three pieces left when we got so full we had to stop. Ricardo came by, and I told him in Spanish that if he was not offended, the rest was for him. He graciously accepted. I hope he enjoyed it as much as we did.

There was a round of picture taking with a few people, and the Mariachi band was back. We then sashayed over to the Akumal Bar for the evening’s entertainment. It was the dance troupe again, doing a variety of folk dances. This group seemed to have quite a repertoire of dances each time they appeared and performed them all well. We really enjoyed watching them.

When we got back to the room, I got Steve to videotape my Kukulcán palm tree. We spent a few minutes on the balcony watching the hermit crabs, then went to bed, trying not to remember that tomorrow is our last full day...
