We stayed in Akumal for 19 days. We loved every minute of it. I am an avid snorkeler. This is the best I have had.Oahu, Kauai, and St Martin, are my prior snorkeling places. Turtles, Barracudas, Giant Parrotfish ( I estimate them to be ranging in length between 3 and f4 feet long! There were ten of them just grazing in very close to shore. They could have cared less I was right with them. Incredible experience!)If you are observant, lobsters, crabs, eels, and many beautiful fish. The North end of Half Moon Bay is my favorite. You will swim with adolescent turtles who live there if you learn how to not scare them. I swam with them for up to 1/2 hour several times. Take a buddy and go out to the reef. It is twenty to thirty feet deep out there. The coral, fish and visual fiest is great! There is a new diving and boating business on half Moon Bay. I do not know the politics or money involved in introducing this one outfit to enter half Moon Bay, but i can assure you it is not a good choice. To much risk of loosing turtles to props and alienating them from the area all together. The people operating it are good people and I am sad to say we should not take there boats out for fishing, diving etc. The residents of Akumal have a valid point in my opinion. The restuarant there "Buena Vida" is long on style and class, but short on quality food and drinks. My kids did not like the tiny drinks. The food was just fair. The two best restuarants in Akumal are "Que Onda" down near Yal Ku lagoon. The Turle Bay Cafe and Bakery is also tops. Be careful going elsewhere in Akumal to eat. The prices are high and the food no better(or different) than what you might find at home. The two places i have recommended have an avocation to make great food. Have the fruit plate at Que Onda and then snorkel Yal Ku. Now that is a great way to start a day! The omelets etc at the bakery are also not to be missed. have a glass of fresh squeezed juice with your meal. Watermelon juice anyone? Go north about 10 kilometers and pass Robinson Club by one or two driveways. Either will take you to the same place. Look up jerry and say hello! (Knowlegdeable retired guide. There are four fishing boats (pangas) moored near shore. If you go north on the beach about 300 yards (from the boats) and out about three hundred yards you will find the "green mountain". I am sure I am not the first to see it nor the last! You will be in approximately 40 feet of water. The green mountain (I named it that for all the green growth it is covered with)rises from the ocean floor to within 8 feet or so from the surface. It is about 20 feet in diameter at the base. There are lots of fish feeding and living there. A short ways away I came across a turtle too. One of my Barracuda encounters was there also. Closer in near the boats you might see a sting ray on the sandy bottom. The green mountain is a beatiful thing to see. On the southwest side there is a cave opening that I wish I had tanks on so I could have peaked inside. Tacho took my son and I fishing in one of those boats. He has signs there, you will find him. Describe the "green mountain" to him, I am sure he knows it well. He only told me it was good snorkeling out there. Take a camera! This is the only area i returned to three times on our trip. It is worth finding. E-mail me if you find it.
