Just got back from Akumal Beach Resort (aka Riviera Maya Beach)
The Beach - Gorgeous, soft sand, palm trees, lovely water - BUT note - water socks are a very good idea - lots of broken coral bits and some other stuff in the water and while we were there one guy stepped on a sea urchin. I loved it - but if you demand a perfect sandy ocean bottom - you may not like it. Snorkeled a bit but the wind was stirring the water up so visibility was not great - I did see some fish though.
The Weather - Pretty good, a little windy (which I like - cools things off) Days were usually a mixture of sun and cloud
The Hotel:
Location: excellent - right on the beach, less than a 5 minute walk from the little town of Akumal Beach
Food - OK - nothing special but we always found something to eat. We are not gourmet diners so we were satisfied.
The Grounds - attractive and well kept
The staff - friendly
The Rooms - we got a very good package deal with flight from Toronto for this hotel - so we knew we would not be getting the best rooms (about $600 U.S. including air fare and all taxes). Our room was adequate - clean, beds hard, a bit of an ocean view from the balcony, no T.V., 2 sinks, very little storage space. It was in the older part of the hotel and when we first arrived, the water did not work - this was quickly fixed (within an hour). The older buildings have the best part of the beach in front of them and you are literally steps from the beach. The newer buildings look much nicer but have rocky beach in front of them.
Getting Around:
This hotel is close to the highway, yet right on the beach - a MAJOR advantage - we took collectivos to Playa Del Carmen and Tulum - what a bargain - so much cheaper than taxis.
Tours:
Only took one tour - to Coba and Pac Chen ( Mayan village) - it was expensive but the guide was excellent and we really enjoyed ourselves

Would I do it again - in a minute !
However: Note - DO NOT expect a 5 star hotel
