Apparently Sunday evening is NOT the time to fly into Cancun. While I've heard stories of a good deal of you breezing through customs, that was not the case with us! When we arrived (after an hour delay in Dallas), it took us almost 2 hours to get through customs. I think that's when all the charter fly in. Don't know if that is always the case or there was just a big back up that night. By the time we get through, it's almost 9 p.m. and we haven't eaten dinner yet. We picked up our car from Budget (too expensive for a car that will fit four adults), and headed to food. We decided our best bet for finding an open restaurant at this hour on a Sunday night would be Playa del Carmen. We headed there and found a really cool place to eat that was a hotel and restaurant/bar (Paradise something). Filled our bellies and headed toward Akumal. The drive was very easy. I'd just like to say to those worried about driving at night that, as long as you keep your eyes on the road, it's no problem. The road was
very good and we were lucky and saw no animals straying into the road. I would like to warn everyone about some of the drivers, though. It seems like people pass at the drop of a hat and you are expected to get out of the way if the passer is coming at you head on. They don't seem to care if someone is in the oncoming lane when they pass, so just be careful. Thank God there is a good shoulder to go over on. We stayed in South Akumal at Sharon's Seven Seas Condo. She gave me great directions, so we had no problem finding it. You do have to watch carefully for turn offs. You get the hang of it after a day or two. It was almost midnight, and we still hadn't seen the ocean yet. The second we got there, we opened the sliding glass door and ran to the beach! Ahhh, the smell and sounds of the ocean. We could hardly wait to go to bed so we could wake up and start our vacation. The condo was heaven. A pool three steps from our door, and the ocean just a few more steps. South Akumal is beautiful. Very
secluded and private, yet only a couple of miles from Akumal. We woke up around 6:30 and walked on the beach for a little bit. Then off to breakfast at La Buena Vida in Akumal. Very seldom is a place exactly how I pictured it, but Akumal was. I was so afraid that I had built it up in my mind and that I would be disappointed. NOT SO!!! If anything, it was better. It just had a feeling about it (yes, Bill, "Magic"). I could hardly wait to see all of the places I had read about and seen on the web. There is no way to discribe sitting there at La Buena Vida on a beautiful day, sipping fresh orange juice and staring out over the most beautiful ocean I have ever seen. Breakfast was great. In fact, we never had a bad meal. Headed back to Akumal Bay to explore. Changed some money, signed up for the Robinson Crusoe Boat trip for Wed. and stopped in at the Super Chomak for a few necessities (Yes, mostly beer). Decided to go back to the condo and snorkle for a while. WOW, it was like swimming in a fish
aquariam. This was the best snorkeling, and it was just outside our door! Relaxed on the beach a while and then headed back towards town to Yal-ku Lagoon. This was a beautiful lagoon and we pretty much had it to ourselves. Didn't see as many fish as we had at "our" beach, but really enjoyed the beauty of it. Late lunch at Lol-Ha beach bar. They moved a table and chairs right onto the beach under a palm tree. The sky was blue, the beer was cold, the food was good and we think we've died and gone to heaven. I have to say that Akumal Bay is one of the prettiest beaches. The palm trees and white sand are incredible. We even saw little crabs crawling down the beach. There were many times that I had the feeling of being on a movie set. Everything just seemed too perfect and beautiful. Enjoyed paradise a while and then headed back to our other paradise to relax. Skipped dinner that night and I think we were asleep by 9:00. We pack so much into each day, I don't think we were ever up past 9:30. (In a
ll fairness, though, we were up at 6:00 or 6:30 every day).
