Incredible trip for these first-timers. See comments of Hilton under Hotel reviews. Visited Ruinas el Rey (great; get a guide). Rented car and drove to Chichen Itza one day (worth paying for a tour), Xel-Ha the next. Both excellent. Visited Isla Mujeres, but not our favorite day activity. Shopped at Market 28, but found pretty good prices at Kukulcan Plaza shops too. Ate at Captain's Cove (good); Splash (good); Rosa Mexicana (good); Hilton (good); OKMaguey (really good meal and fun); picked up take-out pizza. Planned to eat at Blue Bayou or other nice restaurants, but neither of us felt like "dressing up" (even if that meant just nicer looking shorts!)

Best thing we packed: insulated 1 liter water-bottle carriers with shoulder straps; they went with us everywhere!

What we wished we had packed: extra pair of shoelaces, they're hard to find!

Mistake we made: thinking we could walk from Hilton to Westin.

Biggest surprises: nesting sea turtle; variety of cool birds; and explosion of butterflies on hwy from Cancun to Chichen Itza.

Wish we spent more time at: Xel-Ha (or elsewhere) snorkeling; best part of trip!

Wish we hadn't bought: souvenirs on Isla Mujeres, prices better at Market 28.

Next time: Riviera Maya resort, probably closer to Cozumel.
