We rented a car from Budget at the Hotel and explored ...Car was a Chevrolet and ran $150 for 5 days, including insurance. We ventured to the village of Akumal...very, very quaint little village. We ate at Lo Ha for lunch ..the quintisential PERFECT Beach bar. Try the Lo Ha Burger... I'm still dreaming of it! We also had dinner at La Buena Vida where I had the adventure of trying Cactus! Nifty Bar that has swings suspended from the ceiling, instead of Bar stools! Food, service and ambiance were all outstanding, even in the middle of a tropical rainstorm! Our last night found us dining at the Pescadoro in Akumal... Wayyyy too cool. Sand Floor, Camelions (sp) on the ceiling and the best grilled lobster I've ever had, coupled with wonderful margaritas!
We explored YaKul Lagoon, which turned out to be one of our best days. YaKul is to the left, on the beach road from Akumal. It is a natural lagoon where the salt and fresh water mix. Costs $5 to get in and snorkel. Don't be fooled, the water is murky and visibility limited. We thought it was a bust, UNTIL we started stumbling across creatures. My Husband and daughter swam into a 5 Foot long baracudda (Yikes) My husband and Son saw a school of 8 midnight Parrot fish that were at least 3 feet long each! We all got to swim and chase and play tag with 3 seaturtles!
Our best adventure was driving to Chichen Itza... We left at 7am to beat the heat and the tourist traffic. Drove South on 307 to Tulum and headed west on a two lane, well marked road. Watch out for the Topes Or bimps as we called them.. Hit em over 5 miles an hour and you'll break your car! The are located at either end of each little town. (Also watch out for Chickens, goats, and dogs!) We messed up on our adventure and found ourselves in Coba, where the road became a dirt one..oops... Turned around and made our way back to the circle and headed to Chichen Itza. Arrived at 9:30 with NO ONE there.... Hired a guide for $40....worth every penny! Rey was knowledgeable, charming and a Mayan. He told us much Mayan history, from his perspective as a Mayan descendant....The entire park is awe inspiring... My 12 year old son was mesmerized by the entire thing. Our best tip...when you're climbing Kulakahn...or El Castillo....Zig-zag back and forth! It's a heck of a lot easier than going straight up and down! Rey showed us around for approx 2 hours and as we were leaving... the tour buses arrived in the heat of the day... (and is it un-godly hot! Bring plenty of water!) We left and went to a little hotel/restaurant called El Dolore Ado, across from Il Kul Cenote. We had the opportunity to swim at Il Kul, but our kids wanted to return (2 1/2 hours!) back to the beach.
My husband is a diver and went on three dives with Mr. Diver :-) out of the Property... It is run by Italian dive masters- Nando and Serena.. My husband was impressed with their safety standards and efficiency. His first dive was a 5 minute boat ride off the coast and his second was a two tank Cenote Dive at Dos Ojos..... This is a cave dive, swimming submerged between stalagtites and stalagmites! He was never claustrophobic and said it was one of the most peaceful experiences he was ever had. At one point, they surfaced in a cave - a bat cave and shined their lights on the thousands of bats! Not MY cup of tea!
All in all, Akumal was everything we expected and more... The Mexican people are delightful... while most speak English, a few don't and it was fun to practice my Spanish. (Although they were a little surley regarding the World Cup Mexico vs.. USA soccer results :-) Can't wait to go back to Akumal next year! E-mail me with any questions
