Thanks to everyone's posting that made our trip to Akumal last week outstanding, and one of the best family vacations we have ever taken. Lomas Travel picked our family of 4 up Thursday at 1:30... We were on the Beach by 4! Checked in at the main desk and escorted to the "Hotel" side of the property. FYI - There are two sides of Oasis Akumal - The Veratour - Italian run side and the Condo's more Americanized side. Apparently, an Italian tour company brings groups of 20ish young Italian folks and caters to their needs. There is a specific bar area for them, Italian aerobics in the surf (I kid you not.) and fun and games targeted to them, in Italian. Both sides of the property share the restaraunts. Our (1st!) room was in the hotel, with a very nifty shower with a port hole and half wall looking into the bedroom. May be fine for couples, but I don't want my 12 year old son to know me quite that well! The room was also backed against the disco with music blaring until 1 am. We spoke to Vladamir (who IS a Cuban God!) the conceierge and he moved us the next day to the Condos. That side of the resort had a quieter climate and more families.
Our new room was clean, large and had a beautiful view of the pool, palm trees and ocean with a little balcony to enjoy the evening breezes.

The hotel is located on a stunning beach! The reef is protective, approx. 100 yards out. If you swim straight out from the jacuzzi's almost to the breaker, you can see schools of 300-400 10" Fish schooling. One of the most spectacular things I've ever seen in all my years snorkeling! Group of blue ones and seperate group of silver ones! And yess indeed there are Turtles! Every morning we walked south on the Beach and saw the trails that the turtles made when they came in to dig their nests over night!
