Day 1 - Friday
After being concerned about weather and driving conditions between Rochester and Toronto, it turned out to be an uneventful drive - weather wise. What little snow there was petered out to nothing and it turned out mostly clear to Toronto. Did have car trouble after leaving a Burger King on the Thruway. No gauges, no speedometer, gas gauge, nothing. Drove blind until the next exit, not knowing what speed I was going at, but just went with the flow of traffic. Got off at the next exit, turned the car off then back on, there they are. Fuse problem?
Got to get after the travel agent on Monday. They were supposed to have confirmed my hotel reservation at the Regal Constellation at the Toronto Airport. No reservation. Hell of a way to start a vacation. Hope this is not a bad omen. They did have a room, but not one of the cheap ones. Paid ten bucks more American. Not a big deal but it is the principle of the thing.
Great meal at the Chinese restaurant at the hotel. I may not be a great judge of Chinese food, but this had lots of flavor and way more than I could eat.
To bed at eleven and tossed and turned worrying weather everything else was screwed up. Have to get up at three in the morning. Normally can't sleep before a trip, but this doesn't help any.
Day 2 - Saturday
The vacation begins for real.
Up at three, down in the lobby at 3:30, on the bus at 4:00.
No problem with the airline - at least that wasn't screwed up. The folks in Toronto - and Cancun for that matter - act as if they have never seen and U.S. citizen before without a passport, just a birth certificate. Hey, it's their rules, not mine. They let me go anyhow, as they should.
Board the plane at 5:45, take off at 6:35, fifteen minutes late. Big deal. We also arrive in Mexico fifteen minutes earlier than we were scheduled, but I get ahead of myself.
Great, and I do mean great, flight. Remember, this is a charter - Skyservice, you have got to try them.
Just before breakfast, the cabin crew come through with hot towlettes before they give you breakfast. Never even saw that in a restaurant. Breakfast - omlette, big sausage link, baked tomato wedge, potato cake, loaf of banana bread, O.J., AND cornflakes and milk and all the coffee you can drink. I don't eat that much at home. Also a movie, something with Sandra Bullock in it, about witches. She's cute but the flick didn't interest me, so I read my book for the most part.
Flight was smooth, smooth, smooth. They even left the cockpit door open most of the flight. There was no problem with people talking to the flight crew.
Land at 9:00 AM. Sail through customs, that damn birth certificate thing again - the guy had the strangest look on his face when he saw it. My bag is one of the first off the plane for a change. Sail on through customs and out the door to the bus. The guy from Sunquest almost takes me by the hand to the bus, then he is off to boy scout the next one to the bus. On the bus at 9:30 off to the hotels at 9:55 and at BBV forty minutes later.
Check in was smooth, no problem with ocean view this year. I had asked my agent to see if they could get me 441 again this year. No such luck, did get 440 though - right next door. The bell hop Paulo remembers me from last year and seems happy to see me. We go off to the room and Rubin, the Sunquest tour rep
sees me - and he remembers me right off. "Nice to see you again, etc." Get to the room, turns out there are still people in it. My trusty bell hop and I trudge back on down. They know I am a repeater so they tell me that the group in the room will be checking out soon and even though I would normally have to wait until
3:00, they tell me to come back at 12:30 or a little before. I ask if there is someplace I can change, they give the key to 101. Paulo takes my stuff there, I tear off everything, dig out my bathing suit, cap and slides, fill up my ditty bag with sun screen, etc. and had back to the lobby. I meet another couple waiting their turn and give them the key. They put my bags in a safe place and I go out in search of sunshine.
Everyone I meet who was there last year remembers me with no problem and greets me like a long lost friend. Some recognize me right off before I say anything, others just after I say hi. I feel at home already, and have not been back an hour yet.
By the way Nancy, Alfredo says hi and the baby is doing great. He is a proud papa.
True to their word, the room is ready at 12:30. Up we go again and who do I see making up the room, but Francis from last year. SHe does a great job. I can tell when she is not on, the room is clean, but her special touches are missing.
I have fallen in lust about a hundred times today. Unfortunately I think they are all married. Will see how many of the girls of the entertainment group are still around
later. Only one I see that I recognize is Enrique. He left and then came back.
Tim is going to kill me. I had a massage between 3:30 and 4:30, then a couple of beers, a liesurely shower and then put some notes down on paper while they are
still fresh in my mind. 6:00 PM comes and goes. SOrry Tim, but this is my first day here you know.
Carribean dinner and show. Jackie from Canada remembers me from last year, I also see Betty from two years ago.
Beautiful scene of a full moon over glistening water. GORGEOUS!!
After the show they have a best men's legs contest in the video bar. I get drawn into that and drop my pants. I make the semi-finals and as I am prancing around,
Sira - a dark eyed beauty on the entertainment staff, pulls on my shorts and I am mooning the female judges. Didn't win. Guess the sight of my hairy butt turned
them off.
Up to 1:30, no sleep since 7:00 Friday morning, looking forward to sleeping in.
Day 3 - Sunday
Damn! Didn't set my travel alarm to Cancun time. It said I got up at eight - really seven. Didn't discover it until after breakfast. Sure could have used that extra hour.
Beautiful day - weather report says a chance of thunder showers. By the end of the day that had turned into a damned thin chance.
Went to downtown Cancun and took Laura's walking tour. Got to Market 28 and nosed around. After that, I retraced my steps back to Ave. Tulum and wander off in search of Market 23. Promptly went down the wrong street at one time and was three blocks down it before I realize that the landmarks were missing. Start
over. Not sure if I ever found Market 23 or not, but by that time, I did not care. I was tired, my feet hurt and it was hot and humid.
Go back to the hotel in search of cool water. Go snorkeling in the bay, and found tons of little fish, about the size of bait. Even swam through a school of them. Saw a star fish and some red corel.
After lunch, a scuba lesson in the pool. Think I'll stick to snorkeling.
Lots of games by the pool, lots of girl watching.
Nice long shower, and then down to the Video bar for the Superbowl, not that I care who wins. Pre- Hispanic show tonight. They have changed it slightly - good changes. Later back down to the bar for a beer drinking contest. Didn't get into that. Those were pros. I felt like a rank amateur.
Not a long report, I just basically goofed off most of the day.
Day 4 - Monday
Just relaxing today. Take a walk, then lay out on the beach and read my book. A little more snorkeling.
I see Laura the massage therapist about 11:00 AM. We get reacquainted, have a nice talk and tell her I will see her at 2:00.
Finally have some lunch - nachos, and sit by the pool to wait for my appointment.
Great massage, just what I needed. Started zoning out and think I fell asleep.
Snorkel some more afterwards, then to the pool and drinks at the pool bar. I could get used to this in a hurry.
Supper tonight at the sit down Italian, then a show and kareoke at the video bar.
Hear some sad news. I saw Raul on Saturday and he did a double take when he saw me. It was good to see him again. His day off is Sunday. Expect to see him today. Hear today that he got in some kind of dutch with the hotel and was fired. Sorry to see him go. Hope he finds something real quick. He was showing me pics of his daughter - another proud poppa.
THe Italian Restaurant was in a word - excellent. Fourteen tables in the snack bar and they only take forty reservations- the place has been transformed into an Italian bistro. Met by Martha at the entrance, knew her from last year, think she remembers me. Including her, there are four waiters/waitresses and they all work each table, so you have them hovering over you like protective parents. Bottomless wine glass, not bad tasting. Many of the folks there, also work the other restaurant or the snack bar during the day, but here they have a different bearing, not as informal, more pride.
Had two different kinds of bread, then a small caesar salad, minestrone, and finally Veal Scallopene. Quite good.
They do this up right, just like a fine restaurant, very liesurely, everything cooked to order. Got there at seven, did not get my main course until eight! Finally got out of there at eight-thirty, nicely sated. The one garlic bread is even cooked to order in a wood burning oven on sight.
Kept waiting for the check, it is the only way I know how to end such a meal, but of course, here there is no check, so I just got up and left, thinking there was something I should be doing, like paying my bill.
ANother good show, listen to a bunch of drunks try to sing and then got drunk myself.
More tomorrow night.
