Day 8 • Wednesday, February 23
Our last full day here. Up around 8:00am and hit the taco stand for breakfast on our way into town. We had said we would go to the beach again ever since Isla, but we never seem to make it. But today we will. We spent most of the morning at the bank going over all his retirement accounts. Finally, around noon we leave the bank.
“Where do you want to eat?” he asks. We end up at Mama Roma’s at Plaza Las Americas so we can try and catch a few of his friends that he used to work with at Charlies. Luck would have it there is a manager’s meeting and a few of them come down and say hello. They all remember me from my many visits to Charlies and are full of congratulations on hearing of our marriage. Chuy orders the Hawaiian pizza which is what I wanted but he said we couldn’t order the same thing. So I get a spinach ravioli in a red cream sauce. We end up switching after a few bits cause what I ordered just didn’t hit the spot. The pizzas are very good there...must be the brick oven. We split a crepe thang for dessert. Part of the way through the meal Chuy says he has a headache but he doesn’t want me to go out to the car to get something for him. If he doesn’t take care of these right away, he feels REALLY bad. After we eat he says he is feeling sick and wants to go out to the car.
“Let’s skip the beach and get you home, OK?” I say. Nope, he says, and asks me to drive to the beach. He’ll just lay back and close his eyes while the aspirins take effect. We go all the way back to El Mirador and climb down the steep, sandy slope and stake out a patch of sand. We lay there for about an hour...he’s feeling better so I attempt to go in the water. It is a little chilly, very strong waves, and very windy today; the red flag is out but I don’t want to struggle with the current. We agree to go up to Playa Tortuga where it is more calm and get back into the car.
As we get to Punta Cancun he turns to the right. “Where are we going?” I ask. He parks the car and leads me to the Hyatt Regency. We are having coconut shrimp he informs me and my face is lost from my huge smile.
Now, I need to explain why this gets such a response from me. Chuy and I met in August of 1996. I ended up returning just 3 months later at the beginning of December, staying with my friend Rod and his brother Capi (Rod had been my waiter the night I met Chuy and he kept inviting me back down, so I took him up on the offer of a place to stay. Their mother and father ended up being there at the same time and I spent a lot of time with his mom. Rod has since moved to Toronto to be with his girl.) Where was I. Ok. The second to last day of my stay some family problems arose and Capi and Rod needed to go back to Merida with their mom and dad. I said I would move into a hotel (Hyatt Regency). It was a Thursday and Chuy’s day off. I had really only seen him the few times I went to Charlies with Rod’s parents and Chuy had said we would get together for lunch on his day off--Thursday. I finally got a hold of him after I got settled in and we changed our plans from lunch to dinner. He arrived at the lobby around 8:30pm and we decided to stay and eat at the hotel. We strolled outside and settled in at the restaurant overlooking the pool. He ordered two appitizers. One was placed in front of me: coconut shrimp hanging around the edges of half a coconut that was filled with mango sauce. We sat there for hours talking and ended up ordering quite a few of these tasty shrimp (don’t even ask me the total of the bill--it was pretty hefty!!!). It was the night our friendship began. We ended up betting on the SuperBowl the next month and the looser had to buy the winner those shrimp. Every time I would go to Cancun after that I would harass him how he still owed me my shrimp.
Soooo, he is paying off his bet! We sit at a table next to the window and he asks if they still serve the dish. They did, but not in the coconut...and of course, it was good, but not as good as either of us remembered.
Again, we sat for what seemed like hours talking about our plans for the future: we will eventually relocate to Cancun, just not sure when, me meeting all his family, etc. We asked if we could use the pool (I really didn’t think they would say yes, but they did) so he layed in the shade while I went for a swim. Finally, the sun sank and we headed home.
Showered. The kids wanted to see the Disney tapes AGAIN and I started packing (boy, do I HATE that part). Mari, Mario, Moncho and us went out to Tacolote for dinner. This is where Chuy gave me my engagement ring so it has a special place in my heart. I had some yummy shrimp tacos. We all headed back to pick up mom and then headed over to Mari’s for some dominos. Chuy taught me to play, but I’m still not good at “counting” and just kind of wing it. I didn’t do too bad though cause I ended up with $20pesos!! Chuy drove Moncho home and came back for mom and I. We were watching the Grammy’s and playing, talking, good time. But, it was very late and tomorrow was the big play at school so we drive home and get to bed around 1:00am.
