CANCUN AUGUST 2002

DAY 3 Beach Day

We woke up a little blurry eyed, just enough fun last night to have a good sleep on those slabs of stone they call beds, funny though my back felt pretty good, normally I’m pretty stiff in the morning. (He said stiff ;-) ). We had the hungries, so it’s off to the Palapa Barracuda for some fresh omelets, (Tip #8) you really can’t go wrong with a fresh omelet, and they were ta bien, off to the room for beach and snorkel supplies.

We secure a nice palapa just north of the Aquaworld area by the pier and kick back a little. BC hasn’t snorkeled since we went to Maui about 3 years ago and wanted to practice before we committed to a tour of some sort. Well after doing a horrible job of trying to look cool putting the gear on, into the Caribbean we go. The water is a bit murking by the beach so we head out. BC has a little trouble getting the breathing down so we stop and stand up; we are 50 or so yards off shore and the waters chest deep. Get moving again and there is actually some interesting stuff in that sea grass, quite a few small to medium size fish and some cool under water plants. Becky wanted to ck out the barrier that they have for the swimming area, she thought it might be a shark net or something like that so we head over to ck that out, like I told her just buoys and cables. She’s so cute…

Back on the beach I head over to the pool bar by the Barracuda for some drinks to rinse out the salt water, get a couple of Miami Vices and a Margarita with salt (what the hell) sip on these and start cking out the toys down at Aquaworld, I have always been a want to be sailor and tell BC it’s time for us to go learn to sail one of those catamarans, her reply “You go learn then I’ll see if I want to go” she has seen me try to learn many things so it’s probably best I do as she says. Well I head down and hit up the guy that’s working the equipment and tell him I’d like to learn to sail a catamaran, he tells me in Spanglish surfer lingo “Miiiister, lessons are 9 to 10 am come back tomorrow “ I guess I must have had a sad look on my face he looks at me and says for a tip he’ll take me out because the wind is good. So off we go, Pancho (this guy cracked me up looked like he was right off the beach in So Cal but talked surfer with a heavy Mexican accent) starts giving me the low down and it seems pretty damn simple but I am a lake guy back home so I guess I knew the basics. Pancho tells me “Miiister you seem to got it now, take me back to the beach” Drop him off pickup a vest for BC and off I go solo to pick her up. I sail into the wind (which I still don’t quite understand) over to the front of the hotel, beach the Hobie walk up to BC, she seems impressed I was able to get to where she was. I tell her it’s a piece of cake and let’s go. She gets on and off we go (Tip #9 if you get the chance learn to sail, its bad arse!!!) we cruise up and down the beach abit and the movie, What about Bob, pops in my head and I give the yell, “I’m Sailing!!!!” cracks her up. We return the Hobie to Pancho and I ask him about nearby snorkeling, “Miiister for a tip I will tell you of our secret spot, you can anchor there and see many fish “. Sweet a local hookup, those are usually the best. We tell him we will return and it’s off to Palapa Fragata for lunch.

After lunch we went to the Nizuc side and chilled for a while pool was smaller and a little dirty looked like from poor circulation, met some folks from the UK and my homeland of Ireland, ended up getting them talking together and they became quite the group. Headed back to the Sunrise, ran into Pancho and hooked him up with his tip.

Went to dinner at the Barracuda, Daniel saw us coming met us at the door and took us to a great table, had another great dinner, enjoyed a nice moonlit beach walk and things start to calm down. What a great day.
