Judi and Jerry’s March, 1999 Vacation on Isla Mujeres
My girlfriend, Judi, and I arrived at the Cancun airport March 20, 1999, did what you have to do there and grabbed a bus to Puerto Juarez. We thought we had boarded the bus that would take us directly there, but no -- it seems we had gotten on the bus that would take us on the long tour around the hotel zone. While at first disappointed to be on the wrong bus, we later decided that, hey -- this was all right -- getting our first and probably only glimpse of the glitzy hotel zone. The resorts we were seeing while being on this wrong bus certainly didn't resemble the hotel we would be staying in. I already knew this, but Judi didn't, and I hoped she wouldn't be disappointed.
We finally arrived at Puerto Jaurez and were on our way to heaven! Upon arrival we checked in and got settled into our room. We were on Playa Norte enjoying the sun, Dos Equis and atmosphere all within the blink of an eye! We had been asked by an online friend to look for a lady named Sami, but try as we might we couldn't find her.
On the 23rd. we rented a golf-cart and toured the island. They didn't want to
let us get to the south-end -- my favorite part of this wonderful island -- and the man who turned out to be in charge of the men working at that end of the island waved us off, that we were not allowed down there. Guess you would
have to know me, but we continued on our way. When we got to that foreman, I reached out, shook his hand, pushed 50 pesos into his hand with that handshake and we kept walking. He didn't say another word. He was happy, we were happy. They are making changes down there, for sure, but except for the path, everything changing at the very tip will be unobtrusive and, quite frankly, I think the changes may be progressive for us tourists. I prefer the way it was, but if they are going to make changes, these changes are okay. I can understand why the Mayans chose this exact part of the island for this temple. When standing at the very tip, high above the water, this magnificent view, the remains of the temple just behind me...well, it just does something to me, something religious that I can't quite explain. But it's very real.
We looked some more, but, sorry to say, could not find Sami. We did have a
tasty dinner at Amigos. While enjoying our dinner, we visited with the people on both sides of us (we were between the "regular" section and the tables on the street). The people on the street side of us asked about my wrist (it was wrapped up because I broke it a couple days earlier when my sandals got entangled in the sand and I fell on it while we were dancing the Swing on the beach in front of Buho's). After a short conversation, my girlfriend
had the strangest feeling and asked one of the women what was her name. Do you get it yet? She was Sami! Here we had spent three days looking for her, couldn't find her, and she was sitting right beside us! We couldn't believe it. After all that time, there she is -- we are talking with her, for crying out loud. A few days later, on the 26th, I saw a lady sunning herself by Na Balam out on a part of the beach that had separated itself from the rest of the beach (like a little island unto itself), so we headed that way. It was
Sami, just as I thought. We had a wonderful visit. She knows much about that wonderful island.
We signed up on Isla for a tour to Chichen-Itza. It turned out that Judi and I were the only ones on the island who had signed up for that tour, so our
guide brought along his wife and the four of us had a great time, riding in a Ford Van, stopping in Valladolid and a couple of other places on our way there. Chichen-Itza is an absolute must-see, when in that part of the world and, to me, anyone who would rather party than see this has a few loose screws. Of course there are those who say that about me. Guess we're even. During our ride back, we stopped at a cenote -- an underground pool. I was
there last year, but now swimming is allowed in that cenote.
Much of the next day was spent on a tour of Isla Contoy, an uninhabited island that is a nature preserve with a small building housing displays and a small tower you can climb. Terrific views up there. As part of the tour, they
prepare a delicious meal on the beach, while you swim, snorkel or walk around enjoying the beauty of this island. Another great day!
The remainder of our vacation was spent on the beach, visiting all the 2-for- 1 places, on the beach, eating delicious meals everywhere, on the beach, visiting the stores, on the beach, on the beach and on the beach (and more happy hours)!
Another highlight was having our picture taken with the most beautiful topless lady there. She was out behind the old, huge abandoned hotel swimming in that little isolated pool. One could not help but notice her (turns out she was from Italy) and when this woman asked her if it would be okay if she photographed her husband with her and she said okay, you better believe I was next in line. My girlfriend (also beautiful), is also in those pictures. Truly beautiful ladies! Guess you have to be a man to understand where I am coming from.
Returned home on March 28. We return to Isla Mujeres In November, as Judi now loves that wonderful island, too. She wasn't disappointed. I somehow knew she wouldn't be.
