I accidentally lost the trip report I originally composed in Wordperfect. Somehow it dissapeared after I saved it. Major Bummer. But lemme give you some basic info about the LTI.
It was beautiful in every way. The food was good, and it was exceptional in the a la carte restaurant called La Hacienda. The others are all buffet-style restaurants and the food is good, but not overly satisfying. You wouldn't want to eat dinners in there unless you want something quick and easy.
The hotel itself was fantastic. It was the most beautiful resort I've ever seen. The service was impeccable. It seemed as if there were more employees there than guests. You never had to fight for a place by the pool. It was so big and beautiful and we had the run of the whole place.
As long as you know what to expect about the beach, you won't be disappointed. There is no natural beach, it's true, but for us it didn't matter. The coast where the hotel is located is made of rock. They dynamited a huge area out of the rock and created inlets so the ocean could go in and out of this large lagoon they made. It's quite lovely and good for swimming and children. They made a beach area surrounding the lagoon so it's not like there's no sand or anything. Lots of palapa huts are in this area and it's just beautiful. Since my husband and I were not expecting a big natural beach, we were actually pleasantly surprised to see how pretty the beach area really was. Unless you have your heart set on long walks on a white sand beach, you won't be disappointed by this resort.
The rooms were great as well. We had a big king-size bed, a bathtub for 2 in the middle of the room with a view of the ocean, a huge shower in a marble bathroom, a nice balcony (with a hamok) with a full front view of the ocean and pool. Not all rooms, however, had such great views. If going there, make sure to ask for an odd numbered room that faces the ocean and pool. If they can accomodate that request, you should be just fine.
If you want a mostly quiet, remote vacation in Mexico, this is a perfect place for you. But if you want a lot of nightlife and dancing and stuff like that, it would probably be better if you stayed someplace closer to Cancun. The clientele at this resort was mostly young honeymooners, older couples, and groups of middle-aged people. Not very many children either. It was an ideal getaway for my husband and I as honeymooners.
The sightseeing and tours is all great. We suggest a trip to Tulum, Akumal, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, and perhaps Cancun if you want to check out the other Palace resorts. We visited the Beach Palace and Cancun Palace and they were not at all impressive to us as guests of the LTI. These places were merely hotels, not resorts, and the pools were nothing special (just your regular rectangular shape), and the beach, while natural, was not especially nice. We hear the MoonPalace resort is much more impressive but we didn't have the time to get by there. We also hear the trip to Chichen Itza is spectacular, but it's a 3-hr bus ride each way from the LTI. So we didn't go.
We would highly recommend a trip into Puerto Aventuras. It's literally right next door to the LTI and it has a couple very nice resturants. if you want seafood and authentic atmosphere, go to the little seaside jalapa restaurant. The employees at the LTI will know which one I'm talking about and they'll drive you there in a golf cart. We had a fantastic dinner there of lobster tail and steak. WOW was it good...but not exactly cheap. We spent about $75 for the 2 of us. The other place we hear is good to eat in Puerto Aventuras is Richards Steak and Lobster. I think they also do pizza and stuff too.
The resort is nice enough that you could never leave the entire time you're there, but we would suggest you get off the resort and go be adventurous. We had the most fun that way. Definitely eat a couple meals someplace else and sample the local quisine. It's all quite tasty.
One other thing we would encourage guests of the LTI to do is TIP. These employees don't make much at all and they will bend over backwards to make you happy. Reward them because they deserve it. We tipped 1-2 bucks after every single meal we ate there and about 5 bucks after dinners in the gourmet a la carte restaurant because of the exceptional food and service and atmosphere. You'll feel the same when you go and see it all for yourself.
If you have any questions that weren't answered in this email, feel free to ask me and I'll get back with you asap.
